365 Day 21 – Run Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is one of the most spectacular places in all of Colorado Springs, and a true joy to run. Running season is upon us once again, and if your shoes are feeling a little crusty, it’s time to get some new ones, and hit the road.  Garden of the Gods from the Vistor’s Center, around the main loop and back is a true 5k (3.1 miles). In June, the GOG hosts a 10k race, and what better timing than to get out now and get a few laps in before the big race?

What’s so great about running out here aside from the astounding views you will come across at ever bend, is the bike and run/walker section of the road. For those who drive at GOG, please don’t park your cars in these areas! There are countless trails both paved and unpaved if you are looking for running options with a little less rolling hills a little more flat.

Head out in the early morning. There is going to be a lot fewer vehicles on the road, and a lot more folks doing what you are doing. Trying to get that run in before heading to work. The sun is up between 6-6:15 these days, allowing you to start from the Vistor’s Center and get into your warm-up in the warming sun, and you will be in the shade by the time your first hard sweat comes on.

If you don’t have plans for Memorial Day, try registering for the Bolder Boulder 10k race. The practice you will get out at Garden of the Gods will make you a speedy competitor for the mostly flat and fast race in Boulder!
